‘If anyone dares…’: Ajit Pawar vows strict action against those intimidating Muslims after Nagpur violence, promotes unity

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has issued a strong warning against any attempts to intimidate the Muslim community or incite communal violence in the state. Speaking at an Iftar gathering in Mumbai, he assured the community of his support and emphasized the need for social harmony. "If anyone dares to intimidate our Muslim brothers and sisters or tries to create communal discord, they will not be spared," Pawar stated.

His remarks come in the wake of recent violence in Nagpur, where clashes erupted on March 17 following rumors that a religious chadar with sacred inscriptions was burned during a right-wing protest. The protest, led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), demanded the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The unrest led to widespread stone-pelting, arson, and police intervention. Authorities have since arrested 105 individuals, including 10 juveniles, in connection with the violence.

Pawar highlighted the importance of communal unity, referencing historical figures who championed social progress. "Many great leaders like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule, and others have shown the path of social progress by taking along all religions and castes. We have to carry forward this legacy," he said. With upcoming festivals such as Gudi Padwa and Eid, he urged people to maintain peace and celebrate together.

Meanwhile, political tensions in Maharashtra have escalated over the handling of the Nagpur violence. The ruling Mahayuti government, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP factions, has faced criticism from opposition parties. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde defended the government's stance, comparing himself to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and accusing opposition leaders of exploiting the incident for political gains.

The situation in Nagpur has now returned to normal, with curfews lifted in affected areas. Police and local authorities continue to monitor developments to prevent further unrest. Investigations into the clashes are ongoing, and officials have stated that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
